Montemerano was built on its hilltop location during the 13 C by the Aldobrandeschi family. In the 14 C, control of the town passed to the Baschi family and it fell under the influence of Orvieto. During the 15 C, Sienna took possession of Montemerano and turned it into a massive fortress. In the second half of the 16 C, with the final fall of the Republic of Sienna, the Montemrano became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
